Aloha State Games!
“Hawaii’s Olympics for the common person!”
WHAT ARE THEY?
The Aloha State Games are an Olympic-style multi-sports festival for athletes of all ages and abilities – often referred to as the “Olympics for the common person.” The Games are open to anyone of any age from any part of the world. The purpose of the Games is to encourage healthy living by providing a positive avenue for personal development through competitive sports and physical activity. The Games recognize the physical and mental accomplishments of Island residents and visitors, and encourage development of a statewide network of volunteers who work to advance amateur sports and healthy living activities in Hawai’i.
WHEN WERE THE ALOHA STATE GAMES STARTED?
The Games were launched in 1990, and drew more than 5,000 participants in 31 sports. Within two years, the games had grown to over 8,000 participants statewide, in more than 50 sports. In recent years, the Games have been scaled down in scope to reflect funding realities and to make them more manageable; approximately 3,000 participants are expected in 20 sports for 2012.
WHO MAY PARTICIPATE?
Anyone, from anywhere in the world, amateur or professional, civilian or military personnel. Unless otherwise stated, age-determining date for category divisions within the various sports is the date of the competition for that sport.
WHAT DOES IT COST TO ENTER?
It varies with the sport, but generally around $25 per person for most sports. Singles and doubles in a sport like tennis or table tennis count as two events. Some sports, such as bowling and shooting, have specific costs like lane-usage fees and target fees. These are paid at the site. All fees are designed to cover basic costs such as t-shirts, insurance, medals, venue rentals and officials.
All participants will receive a t-shirt – every effort will be made to supply t-shirts in the size noted on the entry forms; if this size is NOT available, the next available size will be substituted. All t-shirts will be delivered to the tournament venues.
REGISTRATION AND CONFIRMATION
The primary means of registration is on-line through this website. No registration confirmation will be sent; registrations for each sport are noted on this website – see sport-specific information.
WHO OWNS AND ORGANIZES THE GAMES?
The Games were founded and organized in 1990 by Hawaii Pacific Sports, Inc., a private non-profit 501(c)3 corporation. In 2011, the Games were transferred to Kaho`omiki, Hawaii Council on Physical Activity and Nutrition. All sports events organized by the games are coordinated by volunteers; any and all proceeds go to further development of games-related activities and opportunities for amateur athletes.
