2009 Aloha State Games!
“Hawaii’s Olympics for the common man!”
WHAT ARE THEY?
An Olympic-style multi-sports festival for Hawaii’s amateur athletes of all ages and abilities — dubbed “Hawaii’s Olympics for the common man” by a popular television sports reporter. The PURPOSE of the Games is to encourage healthy physical activity among Hawaii residents by providing them with a positive avenue for personal development through competitive sports and physical activity. The Games recognize the physical and mental accomplishments of Island residents, and encourage development of a statewide network of volunteers who work to advance amateur sports activities in Hawaii.
WHEN WERE THE ALOHA STATE GAMES STARTED?
The Games were launched in 1990, and drew more than 5,000 participants in 31 sports. Within two years, the games had grown to over 8,000 participants statewide, in more than 50 sports. The Games were scaled down in scope four years ago to reflect funding realities and to make them more manageable; approximately 3,000 participants are expected in 20 sports for 2009.
WHO MAY PARTICIPATE?
All amateur and professional athletes who have been a resident of the state for at least 30 days prior to games, plus all military personnel and their families who are stationed in Hawaii, regardless of how long or short their current residency. Unless otherwise stated, age-determining date for category divisions within the various sports is the date of the competition for that sport.
WHAT DOES IT COST TO ENTER?
$20 per person for most sports; a person can enter up to four (4) events within a sport at no additional cost. Singles and doubles in a sport like tennis or table tennis count as two events. Some sports, such as bowling and shooting, have specific costs like lane-usage fees and target fees. These are paid at the site. All fees are designed to cover basic costs such as t-shirts, insurance, medals, venue rentals and officials.
T-SHIRT POLICY
All participants will receive a t-shirt – every effort will be made to supply t-shirts in the size noted on the entry forms; if this size is NOT available, the next available size will be substituted. All t-shirts will be delivered to the tournament venues.
WEBSITE AND CONFIRMATION
No registration confirmation will be sent; registrations for each sport are noted on the website,
(alohastategames.org) or through the sport’s coordinator.
WHO OWNS AND ORGANIZES THE GAMES?
The Games were founded and organized by Hawaii Pacific Sports, Inc., a private non-profit 501(c)3 corporation. The Games currently are in the process of being transferred to another non-profit organization that has a similar focus — Kahoomiki, Hawaii’s physical activity coalition. All sports events organized by the Games are coordinated by volunteers; any and all proceeds go to further development of Games-related activities and opportunities for amateur athletes.
