Hi everybody:

If you haven’t seen Sweaty the Clown yet, I hope you Click Here for a few laughs – then forward along to colleagues. While there are many outstanding Physical Education (PE) programs and teachers everywhere, unfortunately, some of the activities Sweaty pokes fun at have yet to go the way of the dinosaur. “Malpractice” is bad for all of us; it’s physically and emotionally unsafe, and even one rare circumstance might carry terribly negative thoughts regarding PE forward to future generations.

I encourage everyone to rally against PE Darwinism (kickball, dodgeball), exclusion (games that eliminate or punish), and inactivity (failure to modify traditional sports). If you haven’t conducted a “checkup” of your child’s physical education program lately (e.g., asked about it at open house or back to school night), I encourage you to do so. Let’s hope you find an inclusive, active, and enjoyable program based on NASPE Standards and bathed in compelling content and effective pedagogy; and not Sweaty The Clown up to his old tricks.

Speaking of great content and pedagogy, there are a few seats left at the SPARK K-2 Institute. I can promise you this, if you teach physical education to these little people, two days with Joan Gillem (our K-2 Lead Trainer and Institute presenter) will change your life for the better!

Hope to see YOU in San Diego in August!

As the Executive Director of Kahoomiki I oversee the administration and management of the Fun 5 program (after school/extended care), the Aloha State Games and the Senior Olympics. I offer a wealth of experience promoting Hawaii tourism and youth fitness. After serving as an Ambassador of Hawaii with four world tours and numerous speaking engagements nationally and locally promoting tourism, I earned the title of Miss Hawaii USA and various international titles. Recently I’ve created, organized and implemented the F.A.C.E. The Music Festival (Fun Active Community Expo), Kaho’omiki’s first fundraising event to further the mission of physical activity and sports in Hawaii.

My career includes a 13-year stint as Senior Director of Youth Market (Jump Rope for Heart) for Hawaii Chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA), working with 175 schools on Oahu and on Maui. While there, I earned the top “salesman” award and other accolades for exceeding recruitment, retention and campaign goals. During my tenure at the AHA Hawaii, I raised more than seven million dollars. I am also is author of a children’s book, “Healthy Heart Contest,” with over 12,000 printed and used as an educational piece for Hawaii’s children; Amazon.com requested to have this book sold online. With a fast-paced beauty and fundraising background, I strove to obtain an Associate Degree at the University of Hawaii and hold many management certifications.

I am very excited to start a new path of events with Kaho`omiki, where my immediate goal is to help this organization be known for its accomplishments and value in this small but great community. I truly look forward to many more hands-on training sessions with our after school leaders/coordinators making healthy snacks, and just meeting and talking with the people who help shape our keiki. Mahalo for visiting us on this site, and please email me if you are interested in finding out when and where our next F.A.C.E. The Music event will be! Aloha for visiting Hawaii’s Council on Physical Activity and Sports!

We are extremely pleased and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Hogan/American Savings Bank Entrepreneurial program. To be given the first prize among 56 different entries was truly amazing.

This exercise provided us with the discipline to do a legitimate business plan, not just one that is in our heads and in notes here and there. And it has provided us with the opportunity to share ideas and make contacts which are going to be valuable as we move forward with Fun 5 and Operation Smoothie.

When I introduced our subject to the review committee, I was concerned that we all would not understand the need for something like Operation Smoothie. I mentioned that a Harvard University study reported recently that the social, economic and health gains we have realized as a nation from the anti-smoking campaign of the last two decades is being totally offset by the growing obesity epidemic. I said that if present trends continue, today’s children will be the first generation in our nation’s history who will not live longer than their parents.

Why? A recent Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report, out in mid April, explains it simply – “the relationship between obesity and chronic disease is more profound than the connection between smoking and illness.” It means that in terms of the affect on our health, obesity is actually worse than smoking.

Lots of other information is now coming out about the social and economic costs of obesity, thanks in part to our very eloquent and caring first lady, Michelle Obama. In the Robert Wood Johnson report, it notes that Peter Orszag, from the Office of Management and Budget, tallied up for Mrs. Obama the financial costs of obesity-related health care in the US – he put the number at about $150 billion a year. That’s just the health care costs; it says nothing about lost productivity, human suffering, lost educational initiative, or other social costs.

Who pays this $150 billion a year – the government? Corporations? Health Insurance companies? No, we do, all of us – through our taxes, the products we buy from business, the health insurance premiums we pay, the co-payments we make for health care, etc. Government does not pay one cent of it. Corporations do not pay one cent of it. Health Insurance companies do not pay one cent of it. Because in the end, they all get their money from us, the consumers.

So our task, from a health point of view, a social point of view, and an economic point of view, is to teach everyone that they have to be more responsible for their own health. And we have to start with our keiki. Operation Smoothie is an effort to do just that – not from a negative point of view but from a positive point of view. Healthy eating is not only good for you, it taste’s good, it’s easy and it’s habit forming. Operation Smoothie is all about blending healthy habits – it’s all that it’s snacked up to be.

A special thank you to the Hogan Foundation, and to American Savings Bank and Chaminade University , for organizing and funding the entrepreneurial program aimed at non-profit organizations. We are honored to be a part of it. And a very special thanks to HMSA, the creator and primary sponsor of Fun 5.

WHY

Kaho`omiki recognizes the importance of being a self-sustaining organization where corporate and foundation support are currently becoming a rarity. It is our goal to continue the afterschool program Fun 5 for our keiki by helping to create healthy and active young citizens as well as to grow the Aloha State Games and the Senior Olympics.
History: Kaho`omiki was organized as Governor’s Council under the John Waihee administration more than 20 years ago, but transitioned to Hawai‘i’s Council on Physical Activity when Governor Ben Cayetano was elected to office. After serving a number of years as a statewide clearing house for physical activity advocates, Kaho`omiki reorganized and incorporated as a 501c3 non profit in 2003 with the purpose of supporting and funding the activities of a proposed Governor’s Council under Governor Linda Lingle and continuing their service as a community coalition of public and private partners interested in the promotion of physical activity.
Kaho`omiki has been affiliated with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and was a member of the National Association of Governor’s Councils on Physical Fitness and Sports, now known as the National Association for Health and Fitness. Both organizations exist to improve the quality of life for individuals in the United States through the promotion of physical fitness, sports, and healthy lifestyles, and support and foster the organization of Governor’s and State Councils on physical fitness and sports in every state and U.S. territory. Currently, 37 states have active councils that promote physical fitness for persons of all ages and abilities.

Hi everybody:

For those of you escaping the throes of winter, welcome to spring! Late sunsets (evening activity time for YOU), blooming flowers (nice smells during that after dinner walk), and the confidence that you WILL survive another school year (oh those boys in my 6th period class…). At SPARK – we know you’ve spent the past 8 months supporting your students; now SPARK will be here all summer long to support YOUR professional growth.

Speaking of professional growth — If you haven’t attended a SPARK Institute yet, please put it on your to-do list; you’ll thank me! These 2-day SPARK workshops are so much fun – and you’ll leave with exciting and effective new tools for your toolbox. Plus, where else can you meet teachers from all around the globe who are interested in exactly the same thing you are? How great is that?

Here’s a secret: A lot of people attend SPARK Institutes to grow professionally yes, but they stay to vacation in beautiful San Diego! You might be able to write off a big part of your trip – check with your accountant and see. And you’ll be eligible for a unit of credit from San Diego State University too.

Here’s a link to the Institutes (dates, video clips, FAQ’s, more) HERE.

Note: Institutes accommodate only 40 lucky people, so don’t wait long to register.

Maybe we’ll see you in our hometown this summer? We’ll roll out the red carpet for you and who knows, Scout might even swing by for a pet or two…

Happy spring,
