Introducing: Toni Muranaka

Written by Kahoomiki on June 1st, 2010

Toni MuranakaAloha and welcome to Kaho`omiki’s website.
My name is Toni Muranaka and I come to Kaho`omiki with an enriched background of fundraising and notable accolades. As the Executive Director of Kahoomiki I oversee the administration and management of the Fun 5 program (after school/extended care), the Aloha State Games and the Senior Olympics. I offer a wealth of experience promoting Hawaii tourism and youth fitness. After serving as an Ambassador of Hawaii with four world tours and numerous speaking engagements nationally and locally promoting tourism, I earned the title of Miss Hawaii USA and various international titles. Recently I’ve created, organized and implemented the F.A.C.E. The Music Festival (Fun Active Community Expo), Kaho’omiki’s first fundraising event to further the mission of physical activity and sports in Hawaii.

My career includes a 13-year stint as Senior Director of Youth Market (Jump Rope for Heart) for Hawaii Chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA), working with 175 schools on Oahu and on Maui. While there, I earned the top “salesman” award and other accolades for exceeding recruitment, retention and campaign goals. During my tenure at the AHA Hawaii, I raised more than seven million dollars. I am also is author of a children’s book, “Healthy Heart Contest,” with over 12,000 printed and used as an educational piece for Hawaii’s children; Amazon.com requested to have this book sold online. With a fast-paced beauty and fundraising background, I strove to obtain an Associate Degree at the University of Hawaii and hold many management certifications.

I am very excited to start a new path of events with Kaho`omiki, where my immediate goal is to help this organization be known for its accomplishments and value in this small but great community. I truly look forward to many more hands-on training sessions with our after school leaders/coordinators making healthy snacks, and just meeting and talking with the people who help shape our keiki. Mahalo for visiting us on this site, and please email me if you are interested in finding out when and where our next F.A.C.E. The Music event will be! Aloha for visiting Hawaii’s Council on Physical Activity and Sports!

WHY

Kaho`omiki recognizes the importance of being a self-sustaining organization where corporate and foundation support are currently becoming a rarity. It is our goal to continue the afterschool program Fun 5 for our keiki by helping to create healthy and active young citizens as well as to grow the Aloha State Games and the Senior Olympics.
History: Kaho`omiki was organized as Governor’s Council under the John Waihee administration more than 20 years ago, but transitioned to Hawai‘i’s Council on Physical Activity when Governor Ben Cayetano was elected to office. After serving a number of years as a statewide clearing house for physical activity advocates, Kaho`omiki reorganized and incorporated as a 501c3 non profit in 2003 with the purpose of supporting and funding the activities of a proposed Governor’s Council under Governor Linda Lingle and continuing their service as a community coalition of public and private partners interested in the promotion of physical activity.
Kaho`omiki has been affiliated with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and was a member of the National Association of Governor’s Councils on Physical Fitness and Sports, now known as the National Association for Health and Fitness. Both organizations exist to improve the quality of life for individuals in the United States through the promotion of physical fitness, sports, and healthy lifestyles, and support and foster the organization of Governor’s and State Councils on physical fitness and sports in every state and U.S. territory. Currently, 37 states have active councils that promote physical fitness for persons of all ages and abilities.
